Fairness Test needed - our budget submission to the Treasury
Submitted by Kathryn Busby on 9 June 2010
The Equality Trust and One Society are calling for the government to
publish a Fairness Test – an inequality impact assessment of any tax
rises or spending cuts necessary to tackle the deficit – alongside the
emergency budget on 22nd June, to allow government to prove its
commitment to ensuring cuts do not hit the poorest hardest.
This impact analysis, much of which can only be undertaken by
government departments, allows government to hardwire their commitment
to fairness into the budgeting system, and ensures that these crucial
decisions are made with the best information on their potential impact.
