Reward for Failure and Failure to Reward
Submitted by Bill Kerry on 23 February 2012
Perhaps this was not the best week for the Prime Minister to
start complaining
about "anti-business snobbery."
The unerring
ability of our economy to wield sticks at the bottom and offer carrots at the
top has been thrown into sharp focus this week. We've had the
scandal of unpaid work at Tescos followed quickly by the
scandal of grossly overpaid work at Royal Bank of Scotland.
These are two
very different businesses of course but their behaviour is indicative of the
widespread and illogical belief that already very rich people need to be
further incentivised whilst poor people do not.
I do not detect any anti-business snobbery in this country. I do detect
increasing incredulity and outrage at business practices that fuel inequality,
damage our economy and further corrode our society.
And it seems some
senior figures in the business world are beginning to agree.
