Ensure legislation on pay ratios is backed by action to reduce income inequality, says The Equality Trust

Commenting on the BEIS announcement on corporate governance and pay ratios, Dr Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust said:

“Legislation forcing companies to publish their pay ratios is long overdue, given that a FTSE 100 CEO now earns an average (median) annual pay of £3.45 million [1], per year, a staggering 242 times more than that of a minimum wage worker.

Rising Wealth Inequality a Threat to Future Generations

The Equality Trust has responded to research published today by the IPPR and Channel 5 which finds that wealth inequality is on the rise, with the wealthiest 10 per cent of households owning 45 per cent of the country’s wealth. The report also found that a majority of people would support new measures to equalise wealth.

Major commission launched to look at class inequalities in education

National Union of Students president Shakira Martin today announced the commissioners who will sit on the board of the NUS’s ambitious new poverty commission, including Dr. Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust. Wanda will be joined by Sophia Cannon, the well-known barrister and social justice commentator, alongside the likes of Debbie Weekes from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Government Must Now Take Action on Discrimination and Inequality

The Equality Trust has responded to today's Government publication of a Race Disparity Audit. Dr. Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust, said:

"While we welcome additional conversations and publicity about racial disparities and discrimination, we also need to see more action. It's good to see the Government start to take racism and discrimination seriously, but this audit tells us what we already know - that social and economic inequality are rife across the country.
